Arts Programs

The CCC has numerous resources for students planning to study art, drama, dance, or music in college. Some colleges and universities specialize in the arts, while others offer these programs as part of their overall course offerings. Include the arts as part of your college search to find schools offering arts classes and majors.

For music majors, or applicants wanting to showcase their musical abilities, you should submit a supplemental recording as part of your application. Check the specific requirements of the schools you are interested in attending. It's also a good idea to visit those school. When you go, here are some specific things you should look for as a prospective music major:

  • Is the music program accredited by The National Association of Schools of Music?
  • Make sure there are enough practice rooms and that the acoustics are good.
  • Ask what performance opportunities are available and how difficult it is to be accepted into these groups.
  • Make an appointment to talk with a professor who teaches your instrument. Do you feel comfortable with him or her?
  • See if private lessons are available and the cost, if any.
  • Investigate whether study abroad programs and internships are available to music majors.

For art majors, or applicants who want to showcase their artistic abilities, you will probably need to include a portfolio of your work as part of your application. Check the requirements of the schools that interest you most. Here are some questions to ask of art schools:

  • Will you receive a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)?
  • Is there enough studio space?
  • Does the program have a particular focus?
  • Are there museums and galleries close by?
  • Can you combine your art degree with another program, such as business?

For drama majors, or applicants who want to showcase their theater experience, include a resume of your roles and productions. Prospective drama majors should ask:

  • What is the audition policy?
  • Is the drama program accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre Arts?
  • Can you specialize in your area of interest, such as musical theater?
  • Does the school contain the latest in scene shops, costume shops, and stage equipment?
  • Can you attend a production to judge the quality?

For those majoring in dance, or applicants who want to showcase their dance experience, include a resume of your roles and performances. Prospective dance majors should ask:

  • Is the dance program accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance?
  • What is the audition policy?
  • How often will you get a chance to perform?
  • What type of dance does the department focus on?
